Google Business Profile for Pest Control: Full Setup Guide

A step-by-step guide to setting up and optimizing a Google…

Your Google Business Profile (formerly Google My Business, or GMB) is the listing that appears on Google Maps and in the Map Pack. For most pest control companies it’s the single biggest source of calls from Google. Here’s how to set it up and optimize it properly.

Step 1: Claim and verify your profile

Search for your business on Google Maps. If a profile exists, claim it; if not, create one at business.google.com. Google will ask you to verify, often by video, phone, email or postcard depending on your account. Use your real, legal business name exactly as customers see it on your vehicles and invoices.

Step 2: Set up as a service-area business

Most pest control companies travel to customers. If customers don’t visit your premises, hide your address and add service areas instead: the cities, suburbs or regions you actually serve. Keep the list realistic. Listing areas you rarely work in won’t help you rank there and can confuse customers.

Step 3: Choose the right categories

Your primary category has the biggest impact on rankings. For most companies it’s Pest control service. Add relevant secondary categories that genuinely describe what you do, such as termite control or wildlife and animal control services, if they’re available in your country and apply to you.

Step 4: Add every service

List each service separately (termite inspection, bed bug treatment, rodent control, wasp nest removal and so on) with a short, clear description. This helps Google match your profile to specific searches.

Step 5: Write a strong business description

Use the 750 characters to explain what you do, which pests you treat, the areas you serve and what makes you different. Write for customers, not for keyword stuffing, and don’t include links or promotional prices.

Step 6: Add real photos, and keep adding them

Upload your logo, a cover photo, and real photos of your team, uniforms, vehicles and jobs. Keep adding new photos every month. Active profiles with real imagery tend to earn more trust and engagement.

Step 7: Post regularly

Google posts let you share updates, seasonal tips and offers. A short post every week or two (spring termite inspections, summer mosquito treatments, winter rodent proofing) keeps your profile active and gives searchers a reason to call.

Step 8: Build a review system

Reviews influence Map Pack rankings and whether people choose you. Build a simple process:

  • Ask every satisfied customer at the end of the job.
  • Send a direct review link by text or email the same day.
  • Give technicians a card or QR code that links to your review page.
  • Reply to every review, thanking positive reviewers and responding calmly and helpfully to negative ones.

Never buy reviews or offer rewards in exchange for them. It breaks Google’s policies and can get reviews removed or your profile penalized.

Step 9: Keep your details consistent

Your business name, phone number and address (or service area) should match across your website, social profiles and business directories. Inconsistent details make it harder for Google to trust your listing.

Step 10: Use Q&A and messaging thoughtfully

Add common questions and answers yourself (“Are your treatments safe for pets?”, “Do you offer free inspections?”). If you enable messaging, make sure someone responds quickly.

How to avoid a suspended GMB listing

Suspensions often come from guideline issues. Common causes include:

  • Adding keywords or locations to your business name that aren’t part of your real name.
  • Using a virtual office or an address you don’t actually operate from.
  • Creating multiple profiles for the same business without real separate locations.
  • Showing an address when customers can’t visit you.

If your listing is suspended, fix the underlying issue first, then request reinstatement with clear evidence, such as business registration documents and photos of signage or vehicles.

How to rank higher in the Map Pack

Map Pack rankings depend on relevance, distance and prominence. You can’t change where a searcher is, but you can improve relevance (categories, services, website content) and prominence (reviews, links, mentions and an active profile). Pairing your profile with strong pest control SEO on your website makes the biggest difference.
